What is a subscription kid’s box? Each month with a subscription box for kids, they’ll receive a box of awesome products that you can’t find anywhere else.
How great it was when you receive a box every month? There was so much anticipation just knowing that something was on the way, especially for you. Opening it felt like such a thrill.
Kids these days are lucky, because they have access to a ton of different kinds of subscription boxes that didn’t exist for previous generations. Subscriptions make a great holiday gift, but they’re fun and educational all year round.
Type of subscription boxes:
- Exploring the World
Below I have reviewed most popular subscription boxes:
- OwlCrate Jr.
OwlCrate Jr. is a monthly book box subscription for kids ages 8 through 12 that certainly creates excitement around reading.
What’s unique about OwlCrate Jr. is that each month the box has a specific theme. Each box includes a newly released middle grade book (this means it’s highly unlikely your voracious readers will have had their hands on the title before) and a variety of items focused on the box’s theme—including exclusive treats from the author. Thanks to the careful curating, readers are instinctively led to explore and think about the topic on a deeper level.
Monthly book subscription that offers so much in terms of encouraging creativity, imagination, and exploration amongst the 8-12-year-old children. Definitely a must-have if you have kids in that age-range as all the items tie in beautifully to the theme/book of the month!
OwlCrate Jr both focus on new and forthcoming books and read manuscript well ahead of publication to pick books that bound to be hits.

2. Kiwi Tinker Crate
For kids 9-14+
Tinker Crate is a monthly subscription designed to help kids explore a new STEM (science, technology, engineering, math)-based topic each month. In addition to all the materials needed to construct & experiment with a project, kids will also receive a 16-page Tinker Zone, chock-full of at-home experiments and amazing science stories to extend the learning opportunities.
All Tinker Crates are carefully curated by experts (including former educators and child development professionals) at KiwiCo to ensure they’re age-appropriate and fun, but effective learning tools.
Why Kiwi crate?
- It’s stimulating: This project was by no means easy, but with a little help, it was attainable. I love how it really works those critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- It encourages teamwork: Because the project was a little bit challenging, the boys really needed to work together (and occasionally with parents) to finish the project. They were so supportive of each other during the process and really wanted to succeed as a unit.
- It’s expertly curated: These boxes are designed by former educators and child development professionals, then reviewed by an advisory board that includes educational, developmental psychology, art, and science professionals. This process ensures the projects in the Tinker Crates are developmentally appropriate for each age group.
